Pre PBS Dependants FAQs
The purpose of the guideline is to give you a brief overview of the rules regarding dependants of students under the old category coming to the UK.
Please note: This category applies to you if you are the dependant of student who has applied ie. submitted his/her application to the Home Office/Embassy before April 1st 2008
Are there any specific requirements regarding the accommodation?
Yes, your sponsor (main applicant) needs to have adequate accommodation available for you and any other dependants. For more info contact Forgate.
Can I work as a dependant?
You are able to work if the main applicant has a visa for more than 12 months at the time of your application.
Does the Dependant category lead to settlement i.e. does it count towards the years for permanent residence?
No.
How long can I stay in the UK?
You will normally get the same period of leave as the main applicant.
How long do I need to have these funds available?
You need to show that the funds are available to you for at least 28 days. This period must not end 1 month before the date of your application i.e. documents showing funds must be less than 1 month old.
How much is the UKBA fee for a dependant application?
Applying outside of the UK - £145
How much money do I need to have?
- If the study of the main applicant is outside London: £400 x 9 months for each dependant =£3,600
- If the study of the main applicant is inside London (Inner London Boroughs): £533 x 9 months for each dependant =£4,797
I already have got a dependant visa, can I extend it?
You cannot extend your dependant visa but you can switch into the Tier 4 dependant category. We have a separate FAQ for this category
Which are the Inner London boroughs?
Camden, City of London, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth, and Westminster
Who can apply for a Dependant visa under the old rules?
The spouse or child under 18 of the main applicant
