The purpose of the guideline is to give you a brief overview of the rules regarding current dependants of skilled workers wanting to extend their stay in the UK.

You are allowed to work as a Tier 2 Dependant

Does the Tier 2 Dependant category lead to settlement?

The main applicant must have been in the UK for a continuous time of five years in an eligible immigration category before applying for settlement. Dependants are eligible to apply for settlement at the same time as the main applicant, as long as they have lived in the United Kingdom for a minimum of two years before applying for settlement.

How long can I stay in the UK?

You will normally get the same period of leave as the main applicant.

How much is the UKBA fee for a dependant application?

Applying within the UK separately from the main applicant - £475
Applying within the UK together with the main applicant - £80
Applying outside of the UK - £199

How much money do I need to have?

the dependant or main applicant needs to show £533 which must have been held for at least three months prior to the date of application; or
the Tier 2 A-rated sponsor is providing a written undertaking that, should it become necessary, it will maintain and accommodate the family member until the end of the first month of employment.

I already have got a visa, can I switch into the Tier 2 Dependant category?

Switching is only permitted if you currently hold a dependant visa. You cannot switch to a Tier 2 dependant visa in country if you have any other visa e.g. student, work permit etc.

Who can apply for a Tier 2 Dependant visa?

the spouse, civil partner, unmarried or same-sex partner, or child under 18 of the main applicant
