Since February 2008 new immigration rules have been gradually implemented for those wishing to study, work or visit the UK. The Points-Based System has combined over 80 previous immigration routes to make the immigration process more transparent and objective. Applicants can assess the likelihood of a successful application which should reduce the amount of failed visa applications.
The new PBS consists of 5 Tiers:
Aimed at highly skilled individuals who will contribute to the growth and productivity of the UK economy. Applicants under this category do not require a job offer or sponsorship from a UK organisation. Successful applicants have unrestricted access to the labour market.
Aimed at skilled workers with a job offer. Migrants need to have a certificate of sponsorship from a UK employer. Employers will have to proof that the job position cannot be filled by a UK or EU resident before they can issue a certificate of sponsorship unless the job is on the shortage occupation list. Please check this link for more information on the shortage occupation list like e.g. salary requirements: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/list.
Aimed at low skilled workers. This category is on hold until further notice
Implemented in April 2009, this category is aimed at migrants wanting to study in the UK. Students need to be enrolled with an approved UK Training Provider and present a “Visa Letter” or “Confirmation of Acceptance of Study”. Please check this link for a list of UKBA approved educational establishments: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/approved.
For migrants to satisfy primarily non-economical objectives such as for youth mobility and temporary workers.
